Mileage Marker Mania - State Counties

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (Objectives)
Given a Speed / Time Conversion chart, students will learn how to make a "game" of reviewing the counties that they have learned.

FIVE STEP LESSON PLAN

Set Induction/Anticipatory Set:
Ask the students if they have noticed the green mileage markers along the Interstate Highways? Ask if they know what a mileage marker indicates (usually the distance to the southern or western state line). Ask the students how long it would take their vehicle to travel one mile if they were going 60 miles an hour (60 seconds)? Ask how long it would take a vehicle to go one mile if it was driving 45 miles an hour (80 seconds)?

Instruction/Teaching to the Objective:
Having practiced this exercise yourself before class, tell the students that you were able to recite xx counties of your state as you were riding down an interstate at xx miles per hour recently (with a designated driver). Tell them that it became a challenge to you to recite faster and faster as you went several miles on the interstate (while travelling at the same safe speed).

Guided Practice:
Have a student pick a number between 40 and the maximum speed limit in your state.Using the Conversion Chart, tell the students how many seconds it would take to travel 1 mile at that speed. Then have the same student recite as many of your counties as he or she can in that amount of time.

Independent/Group Practice:
Let students take turns. Give the conversion chart and the stopwatch to the student who just recited the counties. Have another student select a speed. The student with the chart will tell the second student how many seconds they will get and the second student will recite as many counties as possible in that amount of time. The first student passes the conversion chart and stopwatch to the second student and a third student selects a speed and recites. Continue until each student has a turn.

Closure:
Explain that we can often create our own games like this by paying attention to the world around us and by setting goals that we can reach with extra effort.

EVALUATION:
It is not necessary that the student recite ALL counties in the time allowed, but they should learn the relationship between speed and time.

RESOURCES AND MATERIALS:
The Conversion Chart showing how many seconds it takes to travel one mile at a certain speed.
