I Can Do It With Both Hands - State Counties

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (Objectives)
Given a time-slot of about two minutes, students should be able to recite all XX Counties while pointing to the counties on the Mental Picture of their state that they should have in their minds.

FIVE STEP LESSON PLAN

Set Induction/Anticipatory Set:
Ask the students if they can move their hands as rapidly as they can talk? Ask if they can move their hands to point "accurately" to the counties on their Mental Map?

Instruction/Teaching to the Objective:
Explain that, once they have memorized the counties so well that they can recite them very quickly, it may be difficult for their hand to keep up (if they are using only one hand).

Guided Practice:
Using both hands, point to the states of your Mental Map as you recite the XX Counties. Alternate hands (point to Adams with the right hand, Baker with the left, Carrolton with the right and so forth -- use the first three counties for your own state as you do this). It will be a little humorous as your hands cross over each other as you recite the counties.

Independent Practice:
Students can do this while standing at their desk. Each student will take a turn reciting the XX Counties while pointing with both hands.

Closure:
Explain that this is a good way to help them remember the names of the counties.

EVALUATION:
This should have been a fun and funny class.

RESOURCES AND MATERIALS:
No resources needed. Will take ½ class period.

NOTE TO TEACHER: For a real challenge, ask if any of the students can recite the counties in "Reverse Order Alphabetically." Once they have the pattern down and can point to the states in regular order, it is often easy for a few of the students to do this. Try it for fun.
