You're "On The Air" - State Counties

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (Objectives)
Given a fake microphone to use while pretending to announce the news or weather, students should be able to recite all XX Counties of your state in alphabetical order.

FIVE STEP LESSON PLAN

Set Induction/Anticipatory Set:
Ask the students if they have ever been on TV or on the radio?

Instruction/Teaching to the Objective:
Tell them that TV announcers, newscasters and weather announcers must know the names and locations of the states or counties or countries that they are reporting about. Otherwise they would point to the wrong place on their maps.

Guided Practice:
Using the microphone, recite the XX Counties in alphabetical order. It is OK to ad-lib as you go through this list. You can say something about the weather in a few of the countie ("Adams, where the recent flooding occurred") or about some news item of a county that has been in the news or something that you are studying in class ("Madison, where the Pony Express started" for example).

Independent Practice:
Students should be encouraged to stand as they are "On The Air." Each student gets a turn. Pass the microphone up and down the rows until everyone has a chance to recite the XX Counties.

Closure:
Explain that this is a fun way to help them associate something in the news with the counties.

EVALUATION:
This should have been a fun class. The "ad libbing" should include items that you have been studying.
